Along with St. Thomas, Eric and I also took a day to visit Tortola and a day to visit St. John. Both of these islands are fairly close to St. Thomas and they both had something different to offer. Tortola is one of the British Virgin Islands so we needed to go through customs when we arrived and when we left, but the island was beautiful. One of the main reasons why we chose to visit this island was because we could swim with the dolphins -- which is something both of us wanted to do! Neither of us had ever swam with dolphins, so being able to touch, pet and interact with a dolphin for 45 minutes was amazing! We even got kisses from the dolphin and he gave us a ride on his belly ~ it was so cool! After swimming with the dolphins we headed into town for lunch at Pussars restaurant and we walked through some of the little shops -- it was a great day!
Our visit to St. John was the real highlight of our trip. Both Eric and I LOVED the island. It is breath taking beautiful, with beyond beautiful beaches, wonderful local restaurants and really cool little shops! When we first arrived to the island we decided to head over to Cinnamon Bay, which for all of you Kenny Chesney fans, this is the beach where he filmed his Old Blue Chair video and on top of that you can see his house from the beach, it was awesome! The Bay had the clearest water I had ever seen, the finest white sand that felt so good in between your toes and the water was so warm yet refreshing, I could have stayed in it all day. After we soaked in some sun rays, we headed back to town to do a little shopping and then eat at their local hot spot Woody's. Woody's is this cool little shack that has an eat-in restaurant, but also a take out window where you can order beers and drinks to go, it was awesome. This bar also is a very big hot spot for Kenny Chesney when he is on the island. It has been said that this is one of his favorite places to hang out. In fact, inside hangs a picture of him and all of his albums that have gone platinum! We had a few drinks there in honor of him playing in Boston that night!
Overall our trip was amazing and we both had so much fun, in fact while we were waiting to fly back we came up of a list of things we learned during our week in Paradise:
1. Island time really does exist
2. The sunsets at 6:45 everyday all year round
3. Lizards are all over the island and they come in all shapes, colors and sizes from the big monsters that creep along to the little guys that are so quick you can only hear them come and go
4. Everything is imported except for the rum
5. 1/2 of all of the cars on the road are taxi's and they are expensive. Most taxi's are $6 a person plus tip, which when you stay on the island for a week, it adds up very quickly
6. Everyone drives on the left, but because it is an American Island with American cars the stearing wheels are not switched. On top of that the roads are so narrow and hilly, the drivers down there are worse then both NY and Boston drivers
7. If you have Verizon cell phones ... don't expect to get any service, you will be SOL
8. Even when a hurricane is headed for the island, the weather forcast will still read partly sunny with a chance of light rain
9. A hurricane warning is equal to a Noreaster ~ One big party for the locals
10. Every corner of the island has a jewlery store looking to give you a great bargan on any type of jewlery that you are looking for. Now whether or not it is real is another story
We took so many pictures here is a slideshow that captures some of our adventures. Enjoy!
